Kindergarten at Creative Castle
Kindergarten is the foundation of a child's journey towards becoming a life long learner. Students will learn academic as well as social skills that are necessary in becoming independent thinkers. The teacher will achieve these goals by planning, implementing and guiding lessons that will help to develop these important life skills.
Language Arts: Houghton Mifflin
The kindergarten classroom reflects relevant teaching
and learning to meet the demands of this ever-changing world. The curriculum
incorporates all the language processes (speaking, listening, reading
and writing) in a meaningful context to ensure a balanced literacy approach
that values purposeful reading and writing.
Many opportunities will enlist guided reading in a small-group instruction
so that children learn to problem-solve as readers as they engage in reading
a quality book. The purpose of guided reading is to provide and assess
each child's changing strengths and needs over time. The teacher will
instruct and implement strategies that the children will use when reading
independently. Extensive reading completes the process of comprehending
and interacting with the text, and therefore promotes an independent,
problem solving reader.
Legacy of Literacy: Houghton Mifflin
The next element of the literacy program consists of the English component in which the concepts, skills, and writing activities introduced at kindergarten set the foundation for the formal composition instruction at the upper grades. The first three units offer activities to help students learn letters, words, numbers, colors, and kinds of sentences. The focus skill lessons address oral language, grammar, vocabulary, and writing. The children will be given an opportunity to write and collaborate with the teacher to create a composition that reflects each writing mode.
Math: Houghton Mifflin
The kindergarten children will have an opportunity to be successful learning mathematics. The teacher will use the Arizona Core Curriculum Content Standards along with the objectives from the mathematics program from Houghton Mifflin. Students will acquire the appropriate mathematical skills, understandings, and attitudes that they will need to achieve in their future careers and daily lives.
Science: Houghton Mifflin
Concepts and standards are derived from the Houghton Mifflin Program and Arizona Core Curriculum Content Standards.
Social Studies: Houghton Mifflin
Concepts and standards are derived from the Houghton Mifflin Program and Arizona Core Curriculum Content Standards.
The kindergarten teacher encourages children to see themselves as readers, writers, and problem solvers. Our goal is to value the process as well as the product, and understand that all children are unique with varying degrees of talents.
